In Witness of Music, Alexander Suczek combs the archives and his memories to share intimate details of how Pro Musica Detroit outlasted the 19 other chapters that were established throughout the nation in the 1920s. Neither the Great Depression nor wartime nor changes in concert venues have veered the venerable concert society from its mission, which continues to this very day. Witness of Music is complete with details and reviews of many of its concerts and the impact the musicians and composers would later have on classical music on an international level. Likewise, The Witness of Music also recants the efforts of the many Detroit-area residents who volunteered to bring such talent to the community and leave their marks on an important slice of local cultural history. In addition to Suczek’s narration,  Witness of Music includes a full roster of composers, musicians, programs as well as board members who have served Pro Musica Detroit throughout the years.

About the Author, Alexander Suczek

Alexander Suczek In addition to his longtime service to Pro Musica Detroit, Alexander Suczek’s involvement in classical music and the arts began while a student at Harvard University as a company member of the Brattle Theater. Since then, Suczek has performed as a classical guitarist and folk and art singer and headed a summer concert series for 25 years. For the past several years, he has authored a weekly column in the Grosse Pointe News, "State of the Arts." In 2006, he was decorated by the Austrian government for promoting that country’s image in arts and music in the United States. Now retired, he was a writer and executive for Campbell-Ewald. He now spends his time at his homes in Grosse Pointe Farms and South Padre Island, Texas.

The Witness of Music: A few weeks back I had the pleasure of attending a reading with Alexander Suczek, former president of Pro-Musica Detroit and author of The Witness of Music: 50 Years of Pro-Musica Detroit published by Marick Press. Pro-Musica is a national organization dedicated to stage up and coming musicians and composers. Pro-Musica Detroit has been up and running in this city for 81 consecutive years.
